The Arizona Coyotes have acquired the negotiating rights to defenseman Alex Gologoski from the Dallas Stars in exchange for a 2016 5th Round Pick.
The Coyotes will have exclusive negotiating rights to Gologoski, 30, until June 25th. The Coyotes will fly him into Arizona very soon and sell him on their system, location, game-style, etc.
Gologoski had 37 points in 82 games with Dallas last season.
This move makes sense for the Coyotes as well as the Dallas Stars. The Coyotes are in desperate need of a defenseman, and they have the cap room for the salary Gologoski will command. Especially with Michael Stone’s injury, who is expected to still be in rehab by the start of the preseason.
Dallas is moving on from Gologoswki who had some serious turnover issues. Don’t fret Yotes fans, I believe Gologoski can turn it around in the Valley of the Sun.
Phil Kessel is a perfect example of how a change in scenery can positively affect a player. Look at how Kessel played in Toronto compared to Pittsburgh. Now Gologoski did play with Dave Tippett before when Tippett was the head coach of Dallas, but that was under different management, and with a different coaching staff and roster. The players around you and the management can easily affect the way you play just as easily as the head coach affects your play.
All this is dependent on if Gologoski signs with Arizona. If he chooses not, which he certainly can, he hits the open market on July 1st. Although, given that all the Coyotes gave up was a 5th Round Pick, this is a perfect example of low risk, high reward.
Freshman 27-year-old General Manager John Chayka is already starting to make his mark with the Coyotes. We’ll have to see how many moves he makes to improve the struggling Arizona roster. Given IceArizona’s* desire to start winning now, we’re willing to bet it’s going to be a busy summer and free agency for Chayka. Buckle up Arizona fans, your team is in for an overhaul.
